Help John Sheffey Heal, Ride Again, and Turn 40 with Hope

It’s BJ to some, and Chef John Sheffey to most—but to all of us, he’s simply one of the best people we know.

BJ is the kind of guy who rides his bike to work in rain, snow, sleet, and NYC traffic with a smile, cooks with his heart, and shows up for people even when life is throwing lemons at him like it’s a contact sport. He is the rare kind of human who leads with kindness, gives without hesitation, and always finds a way to make you laugh…even on the hard days.

But lately, life has thrown more at him than any one person should have to carry.

Last month, he was in a serious biking accident while commuting to work. The accident left him with herniated discs in his back and neck, along with fractures in his hand and finger. The injuries have made it nearly impossible to work, to cook, or to just live comfortably day-to-day.

And just when we thought things couldn’t get worse... they did.

On May 30th, while at a dentist appointment near NYU (because yes, BJ is a responsible adult who flosses), his only form of transportation—his beloved purple Gunnar Fastlane Road Bike—was stolen in broad daylight. This was the bike he had loved and cared for since 2018, now discontinued and irreplaceable in every way but cost.

John turns 40 years old on June 25th, and while he’s never one to ask for help, I am—because he could really use a boost right now.
