"Look at Me: Confronting Food Instability at Home and Abroad"
A Documentary Illuminating Food Insecurity, Policy Responses, and Community Solutions Worldwide
Introduction
My name is Johnathan, and I am a graduate student at Arizona State University, passionately pursuing my studies in the Humanities. Born and raised in San Jose, California, I come from a family that, at times, faced the harsh realities of food instability. Growing up in a lower-class household instilled in me not only resilience but also a commitment to transcend those circumstances through hard work and determination. Now, I am dedicated to paying it forward by shining a light on an issue that transcends social class, ethnicity, and geography—food insecurity. My mission is to help create solutions so that no family or vulnerable community member has to utter the words, “I’m hungry.” I believe that through empathy, education, and action, we can spark change and ensure that everyone has the nourishment and dignity they deserve.
Project Overview
Food instability is a persistent and urgent issue affecting millions across the United States and abroad. "Look at Me" aims to be a feature-length documentary that investigates the realities of food insecurity, with special emphasis on how vulnerable communities—including children, seniors, and low-income families—cope with limited access to nutritious food. The film will juxtapose experiences from multiple regions in the U.S. with international perspectives, revealing the common threads and unique challenges faced by those struggling with hunger. Our central aim is to humanize the crisis, expose systemic barriers, and spark meaningful conversations that lead to actionable solutions.
Policy Influence: The Role of National, State, and Local County Policies
Public policy is a critical lever in the fight against food insecurity. This documentary will explore how national legislation—such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the National School Lunch Program, and international aid initiatives—provides a safety net for at-risk populations. In addition, we will spotlight state-driven innovations and the pivotal role of county and municipal governments in bridging gaps, adapting programs to local needs, and fostering partnerships with non-profits and food banks. By examining both successful and struggling policy frameworks, the film will clarify the direct impact of governance on everyday lives and highlight the ongoing need for robust policy reform.
Community Involvement: Education and Sustainable Resource Initiatives
While policy sets the stage, community action delivers immediate and lasting change. "Look at Me" will feature grassroots organizations, urban gardens, school-based nutrition education, and volunteer-driven food cooperatives. Through vivid storytelling, viewers will witness how empowered communities can reclaim agency over food access, foster resilience, and create sustainable resources such as farmers' markets, food recovery programs, and local educational campaigns. By documenting these efforts, we seek to inspire audiences to replicate successful models in their own neighborhoods and to recognize the power of collective action.
The Importance of This Documentary
Food insecurity is often invisible, overlooked, or misunderstood. This documentary matters because it brings untold stories to the forefront, challenges stereotypes, and exposes the structural roots of hunger. By raising awareness, "Look at Me" aims to galvanize public support, influence policymakers, and encourage philanthropic investment in practical solutions. Ultimately, our film aspires to be a catalyst for change—educating viewers, empowering communities, and fostering hope where it is needed most.
Funding Plan: Budget and Use of Raised Funds
To achieve this vision, I require funding for the following essential production components:
• Documentary Film Equipment: Acquisition of high-definition cameras, audio gear, lighting, and stabilization equipment to ensure cinematic quality.
• Production Expenses: Travel and accommodation for filming on location (domestic and international), location permits, and on-site logistics.
• Post-Production: Professional editing, sound design, scoring, and color grading to craft a compelling final product.
• Research and Outreach: Resources for fact-checking, expert interviews, translation services, and community engagement.
• Distribution: Festival submissions, digital release, community screenings, and educational toolkits to amplify impact.
Every contribution will be transparently allocated to these areas, maximizing the documentary’s reach and influence.
