We are raising money for the family of John Shattuck to cover medical expenses and lost income.
John Shattuck, was diagnosed last month with colon cancer. Things have taken a turn for the worse for our family on Saturday night. At about 2 am we took John to the ER. By 9 am he was rushed into Emergency surgery and is now fighting for his life currently in the ICU.
When he underwent his first chemo treatment for colon cancer- five days ago, Thursday, the chemo attacked the 6” tumor of his transverse colon and between the treatment and yesterday morning, the tumor ruptured. How often does adenocarcinoma of the colon cause a rupture after chemotherapy? 0-2%!
He’s in kidney failure, has cardiac calcification, peritonitis, is septic, was severely dehydrated- the doctor used terms like “starvation levels” for his electrolytes and sodium levels which was 113 (normal sodium values fall between 135-145, 107 is death... He is now at 120)
The surgeon performed the emergency surgery and removed 14” of his colon that was destroyed - said the perforation was the largest he had ever seen in 30 years (8”).
They put in a colostomy bag, removed 1.5 gallons of fecal matter/infection/puss from his abdomen which took 10L to clean out.
He is currently intubated and sedated- they will attempt to ween him off the drugs he’s on to raise his BP at some point. He will be sedated and intubated for several more days as well as put him on dialysis. He is in renal failure, only has 30% function in his kidneys. He is on heavy, heavy duty antibiotics to work on the pancreatitis and sepsis.
He was not expected to survive the surgery. He did. He is still in absolute CRITICAL CONDITION. Every hour that passes is one more hour he’s fighting to stay alive. We are all terrified. The next 72 hours are crucial.
As a family, we went from his first chemo session to facing life without him- words are difficult to express what we are all feeling.
If anyone is able to help the family with expenses; please reach out to us privately or donate here on GoFundMe
THANK YOU so much everyone for all of the warm wishes and I will update this post as conditions change.
