Support John: Oprah Winfrey Scholar Needs EMT Training

My name is John Jaylen Gwynn, a rising junior at Morehouse College studying chemistry & psychology on the premedical track from Hartford, Connecticut. I started my journey at Morehouse last fall at the age of thirty, with the goal of becoming a clinical research psychiatrist. I spent more than a decade prior to enrolling in Morehouse working in community and youth development where I formally worked as a case manager to youth who committed gang and street violence. Since I have been at Morehouse, I have excelled tremendously and have already made impacts in my new community. I have worked hard to secure the scholarships to pay for next year's tuition by becoming a Residential Advisor and earning the prestigious Oprah Winfrey Scholarship. Although I am fortunate enough to not have to worry about tuition for next school year, my family and I still struggle to support my journey to medical school.

A critical component of getting into medical school is getting clinical hours, and I plan to earn those as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). In order to become an EMT, I must first get trained and certified, but unfortunately, I do not have the resources or income as a full-time student to cover the cost of the training and certification. That is why I am asking my community to support me by helping me secure the funds to get properly trained and certified to practice as an EMT when I return back to school in the fall. While I am back home in Connecticut this summer conducting research and service projects, I would like to take advantage of the opportunity to also get certified this summer as an EMT. I Plan on receiving my training at EMS Training Professionals in South Windsor, CT. They have several options of training that will allow me to complete this before I return to Morehouse in the fall.
