JOHN NORTON arrived in Juneau in September of 1973 as a graduate of Cornell University School of Agriculture, with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology. He built his first home in Haines in 1977. His years as a commercial fisherman, ADF&G technician, small business owner, and committed volunteer in the fire department, the Fair, community recycling and clean-up events, Eldred Rock reconstruction, theater productions at the Chilkat Center, as well as collaboration with USGS, DGGS, UAS, UAF, USFS scientists working on local projects all demonstrate his commitment to our community. He supports a robust economy, that is respectful of the environment. He knows the many ways in which it provides for us. His freezer is full of local fish, shrimp, crab, berries, mushrooms, and home garden fruits and vegetables.
His conversations with people in town has revolved around key issues that we are all familiar with. The Lutak Dock and the challenges young families face for jobs, affordable housing, and childcare sit at the top of the list. Borough budget challenges such as funding our schools to maintain a high level of excellence, helping the elderly, supporting the non-profit organizations that fill so many roles, and maintaining infrastructure all get mentioned. He is committed to find positive solutions to maintaining the quality of life that we all love so much.
