John Newkirk has been my friend, co-worker, and cycling companion for over a decade. As the owner of Cycle Science, a beloved bike shop in Oakland, John has helped countless riders with new builds and expert bike fittings. He’s also the heart and soul behind a popular weekly group ride out of Swell Bikes in San Francisco, where he leads 50+ riders on challenging 50-mile journeys. His dedication to the Bay Area cycling community is unmatched, and his kindness touches everyone he meets.

Recently, John was hospitalized with a chronic autoimmune disorder. This sudden illness has forced him to step away from Cycle Science and group rides, leaving him unable to work and facing mounting medical bills. With his only source of income gone, John is struggling to cover basic living expenses and keep Cycle Science afloat.
