Hello. My name is John David and I'm an early fortysomething freelance journalist and aspiring teacher who lives in Southeast Texas.

In late 2023, my health began to decline. I couldn't move as much as I used to, fatigue set in frequently, and the lower part of my body began to swell. I didn't get a chance to celebrate Christmas and New Year's with friends and family. In addition, my production at work decreased.

I had an episode in January of this year in which I froze for a few seconds, prompting what would become a nearly month long stay in the hospital. I would learn from doctors that I suffer from high blood pressure, kidney disease stage three, and congestive heart failure. I successfully underwent a cardiac catheterization and an operation to rid my left knee of excess fluid. Since my discharge, I've been on a regimen of more than four medications to help my BP, kidney, and heart.

Unfortunately, my pay and assignment load have reduced so much since my return to duty to where it's difficult to pay for my meds and other necessities. I normally refrain from asking for help.
