Help John Bates fight Cancer and support his family.

We’re reaching out during one of the most difficult times our family has ever faced. My older brother, John Bates, was recently diagnosed with carcinoma of the skull base—a rare and serious cancer located beneath the brain that affects critical functions like vision, hearing, and facial movement. Needless to say, our world has been turned upside down.

John is a loving son, brother, and friend—but most importantly, a devoted husband to his wife, Katy, and a proud father to their 12-year-old daughter, Julia—his whole world. He’s also the owner of JB Landscape, known across the Central Coast for creating beautiful custom ponds—work that reflects his passion, pride, and artistry. Outside of work, music is where he truly comes alive, playing bass in three bands.

Now, John is facing the fight of his life.

As he begins treatment, he and his family are facing not only the emotional weight of this diagnosis, but also a significant financial burden on the horizon. Over the next three months, John will be traveling multiple days each week to Stanford University (over 200 miles from home) for chemotherapy and radiation. The costs of medical care, travel, lodging, and time away from work quickly add up.
