Rebuilding After the Flames: Joey Padilla's Recovery

In the early hours of March 15, 2025, a house fire turned Joey's world upside down. The smoke took his breath away—literally—landing him in the hospital with smoke inhalation for what could be 1-2 weeks or more. We have gotten him temporary coverage through emergency Medi-Cal, as he didn't have insurance, but we don't yet know how much of the costs it will cover. In addition to the medical bills, the fire stole everything else: his home, his clothes, his possessions, and the little comforts he's painstakingly built over the years. If any of you have been to his home, you know how much work he has put into it and how much it means to him.

He is not able to work, as this will be a long recovery, so he will be starting from scratch. In addition to medical costs, the basics—a phone, a laptop, clothes, furniture, even a pint of dairy-free ice cream—feel out of reach. I’m asking for help in any amount to cover essentials while he recovers and rebuilds.

Every dollar counts: $100 replaces a week’s groceries, $50 gets a new pair of shoes, $100 helps toward a used bed, etc. He would never ask this of anyone himself, but I know that he needs the help. I’ve seen how community lifts us up—I’ve coordinated events to help others, and now someone very near and dear to me needs a hand. Any contribution, big or small, brings him a little closer to stability. If you can’t donate, sharing this means the world.
