To all of Joe Kim’s friends, family, and supporters,

On March 1st, 2025 our beloved Joe was involved in a devastating car accident that left him with a severe brain injury. Joe suffered skull and facial fractures which ultimately left Joe with a traumatic brain injury. This unexpected and tragic event has turned his life - and the lives of those who love him - completely upside down. Following the initial emergency surgery, the doctor explained that the extent of the internal injuries was severe, and based on his condition, survival would be highly unlikely and nothing short of a miracle. And yet, despite the prognosis and the severity of his injuries, he is still here with us today—a testament to how far he has come despite all odds.

Joe is currently in an acute rehab after multiple trips and admissions between hospitals. He has already gone under extensive medical treatment including a craniectomy, insertion of a trach and PEG tube, surgery to repair CSF leakage, adding an internal VP shunt to help drain fluid buildup in the brain cavity, and treating secondary comorbidities such as pneumonia, bronchitis, neuro-storming, and bed sores. Despite all of this, Joe has been going through extensive therapy and making small gains. He is in a minimally conscious state as of right now and will continue to require therapy to emerge from this coma in order to make functional gains long term. Joe will be facing a long and uncertain road to recovery.

Joe will require ongoing rehabilitation, medical treatment, and round-the-clock care. The physical, emotional, and financial toll this has taken on their family is overwhelming. Joe has a very strong support system and has his loving family, girlfriend (me), and friends by his side.

Joe was a dedicated student who was on his way to graduating from a doctorate program in physical therapy this year. Everyone who knows Joe knows that this has been his lifelong dream – to become a physical therapist. Joe poured his heart into helping individuals be the best and strongest version of themselves. His passion for healing and serving others was evident in everything he did. Now Joe will need all the support he can get to become the strongest version of himself again.

We are setting up this GoFundMe to help ease the burden and allow Joe and their loved ones to focus on healing and ensuring Joe the best recovery possible. Your donation will go directly toward medical bills, rehabilitation costs, anticipated equipment, home accessibility needs, transportation, and any other expenses related to his recovery journey.

조는 현재 여러 차례 병원을 오가며 입원한 후 급성 재활 치료를 받고 있습니다. 그는 이미 두개골 절제술, 기관 및 PEG 튜브 삽입, 뇌척수액 누출 복구 수술, 뇌강 내 축적된 체액 배출을 돕기 위한 내부 VP 션트 추가, 폐렴, 기관지염, 신경 경련, 욕창 등 2차 동반 질환 치료 등 광범위한 치료를 받고 있습니다. 이 모든 상황에도 불구하고 조는 광범위한 치료를 받으면서 조금씩 나아지고 있습니다. 그는 현재 최소한의 의식만 있는 상태이며 장기적으로 기능을 회복하기 위해서는 혼수상태에서 깨어나기 위한 치료가 계속 필요할 것입니다. 조는 회복을 위한 길고 불확실한 여정에 직면하게 될 것입니다.

조는 지속적인 재활과 치료, 24시간 돌봄이 필요합니다. 이로 인해 가족들이 입은 신체적, 정서적, 재정적 피해는 압도적입니다. 조의 곁에는 사랑하는 가족, 여자친구(저), 친구 등 든든한 지원군이 있습니다.

조는 올해 물리치료학 박사 과정 졸업을 앞두고 있는 열성적인 학생이었습니다. 조를 아는 사람이라면 누구나 물리치료사가 되는 것이 그의 평생의 꿈이었다는 사실을 알고 있습니다. 조는 개인이 자신의 최고이자 가장 강한 버전이 될 수 있도록 돕는 데 진심을 쏟았습니다. 다른 사람을 치유하고 봉사하려는 그의 열정은 그가 하는 모든 일에서 분명하게 드러났습니다. 이제 조는 다시 가장 강한 사람이 되기 위해 가능한 모든 지원이 필요할 것입니다.
