If you have ever bought a bag of ice on San Juan Island, odds are that Joe Sillik and his brother John, the Icemen of Friday Harbor, made the ice, bagged it, and delivered it. Joe and John came from the little town of Fontana, outside of LA in the San Bernardino area of California, settling here after traveling around the USA and Mexico in the 1990s. For over 20 years Joe has delivered groceries, made ice, and done whatever else needs doing in service to our community. Recently Joe had a heart attack and collapsed while delivering ice to one of our grocery stores. He is alive because trained store employees came to his aid immediately and applied CPR while EMS was arriving. Joe, his wife Debbie, and John, thank them and the medical professionals who helped him to survive the attack. Joe is recovering well and will be back on the job soon.
