Joe Sass has been my pal for over 20 years—we first met playing rugby and he even stood up at my wedding in 2008. Joe is the kind of person who always puts others first, and as a crossing guard in Chicago, he’s been a quiet hero to countless families and kids, making sure they get to school safely every day. He does this important work with humility and a big heart without asking for recognition or reward.
Yesterday, Joe’s kindness went viral when he was spotted by the WGN copter carrying a child on his back across a flooded street, making sure the he got to school dry and safe. The story has touched thousands with all sorts of people everywhere reaching out, wanting to thank Joe for his above-and-beyond dedication to his community. Crossing guards like Joe are the backbone of our neighborhoods, working hard for modest pay, and this moment is a chance to show him how much he’s appreciated.
This fundraiser is a way for all everyone to say thank you—whether it’s buying Joe a coffee, a cold Old Style, or some sausages, every donation is a gesture of gratitude. HALF of what we raise will go directly to Joe and his family and THE OTHER HALF will be donated to Project HOOD, a Chicago charity that our guy loves. Your support will not only celebrate Joe’s selflessness but also help make a difference in the wider community. With Joe's permission, I will be managing the funds.
Let's pat this top notch guy on the back with some scratch for a couple of cans of thank-you suds and encased meats and fund a charity that does good things for others. Cheers!
