With broken hearts, we share that Joe passed away yesterday.

He was surrounded by love, and we know he felt the strength of all the prayers, messages, and support that lifted him and his family through these past weeks.

Joe was an incredible husband, father, teacher, and friend. His impact on so many lives will never be forgotten. He is honored by many in the music, robotics, education, and creative communities for his positive impacts and contributions. His innovations, mentorships and legacy will live on and inspire generations for years to come.

We are deeply grateful for every donation, every message, and every act of kindness. Your support will continue to help Betty-Jo and Ryland as they navigate this catastrophic loss and the financial challenges ahead.

Our family is asking for help for our beloved brother-in-law, Joe Acker, who is currently fighting for his life after a series of devastating heart complications.

Joe was born with a congenital heart condition and has faced heart challenges his entire life with incredible strength. Recently, after a cardiac procedure, he suddenly became critically ill and was rushed to the hospital. Doctors discovered a severe infection in his heart that spread through his body, causing multiple organs to begin failing.

Joe was transferred to Loma Linda for advanced cardiac care, where he underwent seven hours of emergency open-heart surgery. For over a month, he has depended on life-support machines, dialysis, and constant monitoring as doctors fight to stabilize him.

Through it all, his wife Betty-Jo has remained by his side whenever possible. Their love story began in 1983 when they were teenagers. They have now been together 43 years and married for 37, raising their 15-year-old son Ryland and building a life filled with devotion and resilience.

Joe has spent his life giving back to others. For 29 years, he was a dedicated engineering and science teacher, helping open charter schools, mentoring high school robotics teams, and inspiring thousands of students.

Recently, a moment of hope arrived. Joe opened his eyes and squeezed Betty-Jo’s hand. After his breathing tube was removed, his first words were thank you — to his doctors, his family, and everyone praying for him. He told Betty-Jo he dreams of the day he can walk out of the hospital hand-in-hand with her. Unfortunately since then, it had to be reinserted.

Joe still has a long road ahead. The cost of lifesaving care, extended hospitalization, and recovery is overwhelming — even with insurance.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 to help cover medical expenses and support the family during Joe’s recovery.
