Joaquim is my dear friend and former research assistant from my Fulbright in Mozambique. He is currently pursuing a degree in English with the dream of becoming a teacher. However, the political, economic, and environmental instability unfolding in Mozambique has put tremendous pressure on students like Joaquim, and he is at risk of having to abandon his studies. During my challenging and transformative year as a young researcher in Mozambique, Joaquim stood by me every step of the way. With patience, humor, and unwavering dedication, he helped me navigate a cultural and linguistic world very different from my own and provided an invaluable perspective to my research. To pursue his dream of becoming a teacher, Joaquim carefully saved his stipend to fund his education.

But recent crises in Mozambique have severely affected many, including Joaquim. Widespread political protests in 2024 and 2025 have sent the country into a period of severe economic downturn. After being forced to rebuild his home following a tropical storm, Joaquim is struggling to find work to recuperate his savings for his education. He no longer has the means to cover his tuition fees for this January.
