We are reaching out during an incredibly difficult and unexpected moment in our lives.

Our dear friend, Joao Vitor de Melo Mendes, was detained by ICE early in the morning while on his way to work. Around 7:00 AM, as he was heading to start his day, he was pulled over and suddenly taken into custody. The situation unfolded quickly and without warning, leaving him with little opportunity to communicate with loved ones.

Joao is currently being held in a detention facility in Baltimore, and we are doing everything we can to secure his release as quickly as possible before he is potentially transferred out of state.

Joao has been building a life here with his fiancée, with whom he has shared a home and a committed relationship for over a year. They were about to get married, already holding a valid marriage license, and preparing to take that next step together.

This sudden detention has completely disrupted their plans and placed their future in uncertainty.

The financial strain has already begun:

Legal fees have exceeded $6,000 for the initial payment alone

Additional costs are expected for:

Immigration bond

Continued legal representation

Court proceedings

At this time, a bond amount has not yet been set, but based on similar cases, we expect it could range between $10,000 and $15,000.

Because of this uncertainty—and the ongoing legal expenses—we are setting a fundraising goal of $25,000 to help cover:

Bond (if granted)

Legal fees throughout the case

Basic living expenses if Joao is released

Joao was detained in front of his workplace, and it is very likely that he will lose his job as a result. Unfortunately, his employer has not been cooperative in providing documentation that could help his case.

If released on bond, Joao will likely face this process without stable income, making financial support even more critical during this period.

We are raising funds to help Joao get through this incredibly challenging time and to support him as he works to rebuild stability after release.

Joao is a kind, hardworking, and deeply respected person by everyone who knows him. He has always shown up for others, and now he needs us.
