I went back and forth on whether or not to start this. We're not rich, we're not poor. We're right in the meaty part of the middle class, the part where medical bills can really take a toll on life. So here we are.

On November 19th, Jin underwent his 3rd leg lengthening surgery at Gillette Children's Specialty Hospital in Saint Paul, MN. He had his femur lengthened in 2019 and his tibia lengthened for the 1st time in 2021.

Back story:

Jin was born in China with fibular hemimelia, a not-so-uncommon genetic condition where the individual is born without a fibula, one of the two major bones of the leg below the knees. Jin is also missing his ACL, a toe, and significant structure to his ankle.

A lot of us struggle with medical bills, but Jin's mom took a new position later in 2024, and maximum out-of-pocket costs will be high. Combined with multiple trips to MN (almost 300 miles away), some involving overnight stays, it can really take a toll on a family budget.

I decided we wouldn't be embarrassed to ask for help. I've seen the power of community. Anything helps. Anything 'extra' would be used for future surgeries. He faces many more until he's done growing.
