My mother, Jing, was a deeply loving and gentle person who always gave everything she could to her children, even while quietly battling mental illness. She lived with schizophrenia for many years, but through it all, her warmth, kindness, and care never faded. Those are the parts of her we hold closest. Jing leaves behind four children and a family who loved her more than words can express. On Friday, May 1st, we lost her to suicide, and our hearts are still struggling to understand and accept this sudden, devastating loss. She was found near the waters of South Beach in Staten Island, and since that day, our world has felt immeasurably heavier.
