Hi everyone,
My name is Angela, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my family during this incredibly challenging time. On June 21st, my dad, Jim, suffered a major and life threatening ischemic stroke that has profoundly altered our lives.
After being rushed to the ER and facing critical decisions about his care, Jim was transferred to a specialized ICU in Boston. The stroke has left him with significant challenges, including total left-side paralysis and cognitive changes. He requires intensive rehabilitation and ongoing therapy to regain as much function as possible.
Currently, Jim is making slow but steady progress in intensive acute rehabilitation, but the road to recovery is long and fraught with financial burdens. Medical expenses have already accumulated from prolonged hospital stays, ambulance transfers, numerous medical procedures, and necessary home adjustments for his continued care.
My mom, Jill, who is the sole caretaker now, is facing overwhelming medical bills despite insurance coverage. The financial strain threatens to limit Jim's access to essential treatments and therapies crucial for his recovery.
How You Can Help:
We have set up this GoFundMe page to seek support from our community and beyond. Your generous donations will directly aid in covering:
Medical bills and ongoing healthcare costs: $50,000+
- Jim was hospitalized for over two weeks in the ICU with many different treatments, procedures and medications.
- Multiple transfers by ambulance
- Intensive rehabilitation services. Jim is tirelessly making slow progress currently, and it’s our family’s goal to support him with long term physical and occupationally therapy.
- His health requires multiple medications for stability moving forward.
Home renovations: $50,000+
According to the American Stroke Association, home modifications aren’t usually considered a medical expense. Therefore, they’re typically not covered by health insurance.
- Accessibility modifications (adding railings, ramps, widening doorways, adjustments to bathroom and kitchen, etc.)
- Assistive communication devices and adaptive technologies that can help Jim communicate to his loved ones with less inconvenience and nuisance.
- Items for mobility such as a wheelchair, walker, lift chair, hospital bed & mattress, assist bars for bed, etc.
This list does not include additional rehabilitation services and financial support that will be necessary over what will likely be the next 2-3 years of healing and recovery. Much of the best outpatient physical and occupational therapy that can make a huge difference in Jim’s overall recovery won’t be covered by insurance, but they absolutely can make a drastic difference in Jim’s quality of life. We’re realistically expecting physical and occupational therapy services to be life long. While it’s estimated to cost a stroke survivors family around $150,000, we are at this point just estimating our needs in anticipation of the future.
Every contribution, no matter the size, will make a significant impact on Jim's journey to recovery. Your support will not only alleviate the financial burden on our family but also provide hope and strength during this difficult time.
Final Thoughts:
Jim is a beloved father, husband, and friend known for his wit, kindness and independence. This stroke has changed his life drastically, but with your help, we are determined to give him the best possible chance at reclaiming his health and independence.
Please consider sharing our GoFundMe with your own community and spreading the word. Your kindness and support mean the absolute world to us.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generosity and prayers. We’re blessed our dad has survived this horrific tragedy, and are so incredibly thankful for all of the prayers that have carried us to this point thus far.
With much gratitude and love,
Angela
