Our hearts are broken...
James E. Pieper, age 59, passed away on November 8, 2024, leaving the world a little less bright and infinitely more silent. Born on August 15, 1965, in Amityville, NY, Jimmy most recently lived in Keyport, NJ, with his beloved wife, Raffaela, whom he recently married August 14, 2024 in Howth, Ireland.
Jimmy was a devoted family man and a friend to all. He is survived by his loving wife, Raffaela Silecchia; his dearest father, James Pieper; his cherished sister, Margaret (Meg) Pieper; and his younger brother, Christopher Pieper, his wife Susan and niece Sadie; stepchildren, Luis, Anarosa and Raffaello Quinto; his Mother-in-law Carmela Silecchia; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is now reunited with his mother, Teresa Pieper, who preceded him in death.
Jimmy always dreamed of finding his soulmate, and after a long wait, he finally found her in Raffaela. Their journey began on a memorable day on the High Line in Manhattan, and Jimmy often joked that he kept dating her despite her "Jesus shoes." But in the end, it was clear—Raffaela was his person, the one he had been waiting for, the one he could share his love with. Together, they were the perfect match, a love story that was worth every moment of the wait. Although their marriage was cut short, the love they shared was deep and lasting, a bond that will forever remain in their hearts.
A teacher for 20 years at PS 138, Jimmy was far more than an educator; he was a mentor, caretaker, and guiding light for every student who crossed his path. To Jimmy, teaching was an act of love, and each student was an extension of his family. His classroom overflowed with kindness, laughter, and unwavering support—a reflection of his dedication and the warmth he brought into every life he touched.
Jimmy’s friendships were just as vibrant as his work life. Known for his quick wit and boundless humor, he filled every room with laughter, transforming even ordinary moments into unforgettable ones. He was an avid fan of concerts, Broadway shows, Yankee games, and a Pint of Guinness at a local pub, where his infectious enthusiasm was always on full display. Those lucky enough to know him felt his deep loyalty, and his circle of friends became more like family, bound by laughter, music, and genuine love.
To say Jimmy lived life to the fullest would be an understatement. With his irreverent sense of humor and knack for practical jokes, he brought color, sound, and joy wherever he went. His booming laughter, his dancing, and his unforgettable smile leave an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
In closing, we honor Jimmy’s life with words that capture his spirit: “No man is a failure who has friends” - It’s a Wonderful Life. Jimmy’s life was a testament to this truth—he succeeded in every way that mattered, and his legacy of love, laughter, and light will continue to brighten our hearts for years to come.

On September 16, 2024, Jimmy Pieper began experiencing stomach pains that led him to suspect he might have an ulcer. He decided to seek medical attention at the hospital. Unfortunately, after further testing, doctors discovered lesions around his liver, esophagus, and other areas.
When the shocking diagnosis of cancer was delivered, his wife, Raffaela, quickly arranged for him to be evaluated at Sloan Kettering for more thorough testing and a better understanding of his condition.
To their dismay, Jimmy was diagnosed with stage four esophageal cancer that had metastasized to his liver, lymph nodes, and lungs. Fortunately, his team at Sloan Kettering has been incredibly supportive and proactive. Jimmy is set to begin chemotherapy in the coming weeks to alleviate his symptoms and shrink the tumors, allowing him to live the vibrant life he desires—especially now, just a month after marrying his beautiful wife, Raffaela, in Ireland.
Their journey has encountered a significant hurdle, and they need all the love, support, and prayers they can get to face this challenge together.
As a dedicated teacher, Jimmy has always poured his heart into his classroom. He finds joy in inspiring his students and fostering a love for learning. The relationships he’s built with them are incredibly meaningful to him, and he misses them dearly during this challenging time. Being in the classroom is not just a job for Jimmy; it's a calling that brings him fulfillment and purpose.
Unfortunately, due to his health, he won’t be able to work for the foreseeable future, which weighs heavily on him. He longs to return to his students, sharing lessons and laughter, and guiding them on their educational journeys.
As they navigate this unexpected challenge, Jimmy and Raffaela need all the love, support, and prayers they can receive. Any contributions to help with medical expenses and other costs would be deeply appreciated.
