We are the Toynton girls and if you know us, then you know our parents Jim and Rose. On July 28th, our dad was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma, an HPV related cancer, in the base of his tongue and right lymph node. Through testing and scans, a tumor was also found in his pituitary gland. This is what doctors call an "actionable finding", as it is large for that area and consists of blood particles. This means that the tumor has already bled and has the potential for bleeding again. As a result, my dad needs to wear a medical bracelet saying that he has "adrenal insufficiency" in the event of other symptoms arising causing a medical emergency. As you can imagine, these diagnoses have completely altered all of life's plans.
My parents will be relocating to Houston for the foreseeable time (a couple months, as of now). My dad's treatments for the cancer will be Monday - Friday for 6-8 weeks. We are waiting to hear back from the panel of doctors in regards to the plan for addressing the pituitary tumor, but we are assuming that this will only extend their stay in Texas.
My dad is on FMLA and short-term disability leave from work. He has worked swing shift for the last 36 years, and was still working just days before he got the phone call that ultimately changed everything. He has always been a hard worker, putting his family first while still signing up for overtime. The pending expenses of medical bills, travel (because dad still won't fly lol), living accommodations, etc. are all going to start adding up quickly. Knowing dad, he'll want to do all of this on his own, but financially it just isn't realistic.
We are sharing his story in the hopes of helping ease some of the burden. He has a long journey ahead, but we plan to face this the Toynton way: together.
Love, the Toynton girls
