After surviving a devastating brain injury at 16, Jim Carroll has now suffered a massive stroke in the same part of his brain. His family is fighting for his recovery — and they need our help.

Help James (Jim) Carroll Recover From a Lifetime of Brain Injury and His Recent Stroke
As a loyal friend of the Carroll family, I’ve had the privilege of standing beside them through many of life’s ups and downs. But nothing — nothing — compares to what they have faced this past year. The level of trauma and hardship they’ve endured would be unimaginable for most families in a lifetime, yet they’ve been forced to live it all within months, without time to catch their breath.
This fundraiser is for James (Jim) Carroll, a husband, father, and friend who has carried the weight of a severe brain injury since he was just 16 years old.

Jim’s Story: A Life Changed at 16
On July 1, 1987, Jim was in a devastating car accident. He suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) — a closed head injury with both subdural and intracranial bleeding. Just three days later, on July 4, 1987, he underwent emergency brain surgery (a sub-temporal craniotomy) to drain the bleeding and relieve the life-threatening pressure.
During surgery, doctors found significant injury to the left side of his brain. While the bleeding was stopped and Jim’s life was saved, he was left with permanent damage to his temporal lobe, an area essential for speech, memory, and understanding.
Jim went through months of extensive rehabilitation. He worked hard and regained many abilities, but his life was never the same. He was unable to return to sports, something he had loved deeply, and carried the effects of his injury into adulthood.

A New Crisis in 2025
For years, Jim adapted, worked hard, and built a life for his family. But on August 25, 2025, tragedy struck again.
After finishing his regular shift at St. Anne’s and driving home, Jim suddenly became unable to speak. His son Stewart was the first to notice something was wrong. His wife, Jody, immediately drove him to the ER. When they arrived, Jim’s blood pressure was 243/208. He was in hypertensive crisis and actively stroking.
Within hours, he lost the ability to swallow, and then the ability to breathe on his own, requiring emergency intervention and ICU support at Penn State Lancaster. Doctors confirmed an acute ischemic stroke in the same part of his brain that had been damaged in 1987. Jody describes it as “like dropping a grenade in the same place the brain was already so compromised.”
During his hospitalization from 8/25–8/31/2025, Jim also battled aspiration pneumonia, hypoxia, elevated cardiac markers, and dysarthria (severe speech impairment). After one night at home, he aspirated again and was readmitted until 9/2/2025. He is now home, working through outpatient physical and speech therapy to regain daily function.

Why We Need Your Help
Jim’s recovery is complicated and costly. TBIs do not follow standard recovery paths — they are unpredictable, lifelong, and unique to each person. With a second brain injury striking the exact same region, his path forward is even more challenging.
One of the most promising options for healing is Hyperbaric Chamber Treatment. This therapy can:
• Improve blood flow to damaged brain tissue
• Encourage new nerve connections
• Enhance function and independence
• Offer hope that Jim may one day return to meaningful work and live his best possible life
Sadly, our healthcare system does not cover this treatment for TBI and stroke recovery. The most effective programs are in Mexico, requiring twice-daily treatments for an entire month — along with the cost of travel and housing.
Meanwhile, Jody — Jim’s devoted wife — has endured two life-threatening medical events herself in the past year and continues to battle unpredictable hypoglycemic episodes, all while working to support her family and serve as Jim’s full-time caregiver.
This family has endured more in one year than most could bear in a lifetime. They have not had a moment to breathe between crises, and now they are fighting to give Jim the care he so desperately needs.

How Your Support Helps
All funds raised will go directly toward:
• Hyperbaric treatments (including travel and housing for out-of-state or international care)
• Uncovered medical bills and hospital expenses
• Ongoing therapies (speech, occupational, and physical rehabilitation)
• Home modifications and adaptive equipment to support Jim’s daily needs
• Household and caregiving support as the family balances care with work and recovery
