Sometimes rescue isn’t just about animals. Sometimes it’s about people too.
Achilles ended up at Chicago Animal Care and Control after a series of incredibly tough circumstances. His dad, Jim, was incarcerated, and during that time Jim’s mother stepped in to care for Achilles. But life took another turn when she was suddenly hospitalized. With no one left able to care for him, Achilles was picked up and brought to the shelter.
Like so many dogs who end up there through no fault of their own, Achilles was confused and stressed. He spent his days rubbing the kennel bars, clearly missing the person who had always been his home.
When Jim was released, he reached out hoping Achilles might still be available — and thankfully, he was. We were able to reunite them, which is one of the best outcomes we could hope for.
But the reality is that Jim is still navigating a really difficult chapter. Rebuilding after incarceration and family medical emergencies isn’t easy, and sometimes people just need a community willing to stand beside them while they get back on their feet.
We’ve already helped where we can - bringing Achilles food and even sending Jim some groceries when we learned raccoons got into the first bag of dog food we dropped off. But we believe in mutual aid and community care - showing up for both humans and animals when life gets hard.
Everyone faces tough times. No one should have to face them alone.
If you’re able, please consider donating to help Jim and Achilles get through this chapter together. Your support will help with dog food, basic supplies for both of them, and making sure Achilles & Jim can stay safe and cared for while Jim rebuilds.
Let’s show what community really looks like. ❤️
