Late last night, one of our theater families experienced a traumatic event that has left our sweet Gabriella and her mom Jill, along with Gabriella’s aunt, grandmother, big brother, and their four cats, displaced from their home. Most importantly, everyone—including the pets—is thankfully safe, but they were forced to evacuate to a hotel in the middle of the night. While they escaped what could have been a much more serious fire or explosion, they are now facing a long and uncertain road ahead.

The trouble began after recent storms caused a tree limb to fall, damaging their electrical lines and outdoor breaker box. Unfortunately, when Entergy began repairs on the neighborhood lines, they did so without first isolating or fixing the damage to Jill’s home. The family didn’t realize work had started until their house began filling with smoke and a chemical smell. According to the fire department, Entergy allegedly sent 240 volts through the home’s 120-volt wiring, which overloaded the system, melted the entire electrical system, and destroyed every appliance and electronic item plugged in. The fire department even showed the family their hot water heater, which had gotten so hot it glowed red—just seconds away from a major explosion. We are all so grateful that Jill and her family are safe.

Now, Jill—a full-time working single mom caring for her mother—faces the overwhelming task of finding temporary housing, replacing essential items, and helping her family recover from this loss. The funds raised will help cover hotel stays, quick meals, and the replacement of their most essential home appliances and electronics. Jill is too proud to ask for help herself, but she deserves to be lifted up. Whether you can offer prayers, good wishes, or financial support, every bit will help lighten her load and show her that her community is here for her.
