Hi, my name is Sandra,
My little cousin, Jesus Fernandez, recently passed away on 02/13/2025.
He was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS).
A little background story: he had the Norwood procedure (performed in the first few days of life). This surgery redirects blood flow from the right ventricle to the body and creates a temporary pathway for blood to reach the lungs. Then, at a couple of months old, he had another big open-heart surgery and beat the odds.
When he began to get bigger and stronger, at five years old, he received his first heart transplant.
Fast forward to now, despite endless hospital visits and doctor's appointments, he began to live what he knew as his normal life.
At age 15, his heart started to struggle, and my cousin was admitted once again at UCLA until another heart became available.
He received his second transplant, which led to a long recovery. After a couple of long months in the hospital, he was released, and two months after being released, he suffered a big brain bleed, which led him to be paralyzed from the left side of his body. Despite all these obstacles that came his way during his recovery, he never stopped showing us signs of wanting to live. He kept fighting every step of the way!
Doctors at UCLA never lost hope. However, about three weeks ago, he suffered ANOTHER big brain bleed, bigger than the first one, in which doctors told my aunt, unfortunately, there was nothing they could do at this point.
The financial burden of medical expenses and funeral expenses is an added hardship that no grieving parent should have to face alone. We are asking for donations to help cover the costs of honoring Jesus's life. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference and help ease the stress on his family as they grieve.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your kindness, love, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
With love and gratitude,
Sandra
