My name is Tammie and I am the granddaughter of Jerry and Linda Huffman! As many of you know by now pawpaw had a traumatic logging accident on Tuesday May 20th, 2025 resulting in him being airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem.
Pawpaw showed to have internal bleeding which required emergency surgery when he arrived at the ER. They were able to stop the bleeding. However, he was very combative and confused. His blood pressure was averaging 80/30. They gave fluids and gave 2 units of blood. Vertebrae T1-T6 are broken along with right rib fractures 3-5.
On Wednesday morning, a CODE STROKE was called on Pawpaw due to concerns about decreased grip, confusion, and slurred speech. After examination, they ruled out a stroke, believing his symptoms were caused by confusion from neurological trauma. Pawpaw struggled to breathe and agreed to be put on a ventilator. They plan to keep him sedated. We know he has a kidney injury, and temporary dialysis is planned. Another CT scan is also planned to ensure nothing has been missed.
On Thursday morning The CT scan revealed a 7 mm effusion on the brain, prompting consultation with Neurosurgery. At this time neurosurgery is not concerned due to how responsive he has been during his assessments. Pawpaw has received 4 blood transfusions due to his hemoglobin continuing to fluctuate. However, hemoglobin seems to be stable at this time. Pawpaw is very sick and there was concerns for an infection. While awaiting final blood culture results, broad-spectrum antibiotic was started! Although Pawpaw remains on a ventilator, settings have been adjusted to minimal levels.
On Friday morning, Pawpaw's condition remains critical, and he is still in ICU, but his condition is improving. He began feedings through a feeding tube, and the medical team is reducing his medications and fluids. Dialysis continues, with increased urine output, although not yet at the desired level. An MRI is planned, but will only proceed once Pawpaw's condition is stable enough.
On Friday afternoon, The medical team successfully transported him to the elevator for his MRI, but unfortunately, the MRI machine experienced technical difficulties. We are currently awaiting its restoration. Pawpaw’s blood pressure and fluid levels are a concern, prompting the medical team to administer additional fluids and restart a low dose of blood pressure medication. The dialysis machine encountered a clot at approximately 4:00 pm, resulting in a four-hour pause in dialysis treatment. Although the medical team had hoped to conduct the MRI before resuming dialysis, they were required to restart the treatment. However, Pawpaw’s access site is not functioning properly, and the medical team will administer Cathflo in an effort to resume dialysis within the hour.
On Saturday, the medical team was able to complete an MRI. Due to the increased urine output we are seeing the medical team has decided to stop dialysis. The medical team also took pawpaw off the ventilator.
Pawpaw's critical condition persists and he is still in ICU, yet we observe gradual progress. I have initiated a fundraising effort to help offset Mawmaw's expenses and the medical bills. In spite of the extended recovery period of Pawpaw, our optimism persists. My pawpaw's unwavering resolve and reluctance to accept help are well-known traits. His devotion to God and steadfast faith serve as a shining example, and we trust that God will guide this situation.
