My name is George Zhou, and I am a former student of Mr. Jerry Meitin at Lakeside High School. I had the privilege of being in his class for four years, and I am writing today because the person I've been reading about in the news is not the man I know. I am deeply shocked and saddened by the current situation, and I feel compelled to share my experience of the teacher and mentor who had such a profound impact on my life.

For me, and for countless other students, Mr. Meitin was more than just a math teacher. He was a mentor who genuinely cared about each and every one of us. Any interaction with him would quickly show that he is incapable of holding a grudge and simply seeks to push students to the best they can be.

He understands his students on an individual level and meets their needs. His dedication extends far beyond the classroom: he has offered mental health support to students struggling with suicide and is deeply affected by the tragic suicides of students he taught many years prior.

He is a man who has devoted 20 years of his life to education, a commitment recognized multiple times through his nominations for STAR Teacher, an honor given to the teacher by the highest scoring SAT student in the district.

I had the privilege of working closely with him when I served as the president of the Math Honor Society, for which he was the dedicated sponsor. In that role, I saw a side of him that went beyond the classroom. He fostered a community of learning, encouraged student leadership, and always went the extra mile to support our initiatives. He treated us with respect and taught us the value of responsibility. His classroom was a safe space where we were challenged to be our best, and he was always our biggest advocate.

This is why we are asking for your support. We are raising funds to help Mr. Meitin with his bond and any associated legal fees to ensure he has the resources for a fair process. Any contribution will go directly to helping a man who has given so much to his community and his students.

Mr. Meitin is not a criminal. He is a teacher, a mentor, and a good man.
