Jerry Hensen is a blind man living in Papua New Guinea. For the past six months, Jerry has been homeless, sleeping on the streets without stable shelter, safety, or reliable access to food.

During this time, his health has deteriorated significantly. Jerry has suffered from multiple serious illnesses, including malaria, dengue fever, a severe eye infection, and a lung infection. He has also faced opportunistic violence. Combined with homelessness and lack of proper care, these illnesses have caused significant weight loss and left him extremely vulnerable. We are deeply concerned for his health and survival.

Despite his disability, Jerry has spent much of his life advocating for others. He has legal training and has used his skills to support people living with disabilities and other disadvantaged groups in Papua New Guinea, often helping those with little access to legal support or representation.

We are raising funds to secure safe and stable housing for Jerry as soon as possible. Our immediate priority is short-term accommodation so that he can rest, recover, and live safely. Beyond this, the funds will support a longer-term housing solution that provides Jerry with stability and dignity going forward.

This fundraiser is being organised by Paul Barker (Executive Director of the Institute of National Affairs) and Martin Davies (Professor of Economics, Washington and Lee University) on Jerry’s behalf

We are organising this fundraiser because we know Jerry personally and are deeply concerned about his health, safety, and wellbeing. Jerry is currently in a very vulnerable situation, and immediate support is needed to help secure safe housing and stability.

All funds raised will be used solely to support Jerry’s housing and essential living needs. We will provide updates to donors as funds are used.
