INTRODUCTION
Jerry Garcia in the Lower Mission is a mythic musical journey through the heart of San Francisco—where memory, music, and magic converge. Written by acclaimed Chicano playwright Richard Montoya (Culture Clash), with permission from Trixie Garcia, and brought to life by a powerhouse creative team, this original stage production reimagines the legendary Grateful Dead frontman returning to his childhood haunts in the Mission District. Under a moonlit San Francisco sky, Jerry reunites with his ancestors in a dreamlike barroom odyssey of family, grief, healing, and sacred humor.
This is no jukebox musical. This is a love letter—to Jerry, to the Mission, and to the music that shaped generations. With stripped-down renditions of beloved songs like "Mission in the Rain," the show becomes a soul-drenched prayer, a protest, and a ghost story all in one.
WHAT WE'RE RAISING FUNDS FOR
To bring this bold and visionary work to life, we are raising $300,000 by June 2025. These funds will support:
-Artist stipends (including union and non-union talent)
-Music rights and licensing for live performance
-Rehearsals, design, and tech production
-Community engagement and outreach efforts
-Publicity, documentation, and archival preservation
-We’ve already raised almost $43,000, earned the blessing of Trixie Garcia, and built a passionate creative team. Now, with your support, we can greenlight this once-in-a-generation production.
Join us as we honor Jerry’s roots, carry forward his spirit, and craft a new American folk tale born of the Mission, lit by music, and blessed by soul.
