Earlier this year, Jermain Esty's life changed forever. On his way home from volleyball practice, where he served as team captain, Jermain was struck by a truck while riding his electric scooter. The impact caused him to aspirate immediately, broke his leg nearly in half, and left him with multiple traumatic injuries. He fell into a coma and was placed on a breathing machine.
Jermain spent nearly four months in the hospital, endured multiple surgeries, some lasting over six hours, and faced a long and painful recovery that no teenager should have to experience.
But through it all, Jermain never gave up.
Despite missing nearly four months of school, Jermain defied the odds and graduated in the top 10 percent of his class with a 4.3 GPA. He was part of the Cambridge program, participated in dual enrollment, tutored 9th and 10th graders, and scored exceptionally high on the ASVAB with hopes of joining the military.
Jermain is still healing. His recovery journey is far from over, and his family continues to face enormous emotional and financial challenges.
