Sweet Jenny is our 1 year old Newfoundland. She has always had regular vet visits (Burke Animal Clinic) but started limping last week so we made a vet visit immediately and were told that she has severe bilateral hip dysplasia.
She is AKC registered as well as her parents who were also clear of dysplasia. However, it doesn't mean that dysplasia will never happen.
Our vet said total hip replacements would be the best treatment plan for her at an estimated cost of $10k per hip. Even then, we would have to travel to Raleigh or maybe even Atlanta.
The 2nd option is Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) on both hips. It is still a major surgery that involves cutting off the femoral heads and creating false hip joints. She is a great candidate for this and our vet says she will still live a good Newfie life if we can have this surgery done. The estimated cost of the FHO is still around $7,000 for both hips.
Unfortunately, we had not signed her up for any pet insurance yet and now this is considered a pre-existing condition which wouldn't be covered.
We are currently trying to limit her activity and she is on anti-inflammatories from our vet's office. But it will soon get to a point where she is in a lot of pain and won't want to walk which will result in muscle dystrophy. She needs FHO as soon as possible.
We love our girl and she is the big baby of our family. Anything you can give will help.
