Jennifer's Complex Kidney Transplant Journey
Donation protected
Jennifer Holder is a proud alumna of Saint Catherine of Siena (’87) and Mount Carmel Academy (’91). She is a devoted single mother to two sons, Jonathan and Justin, who also attended Saint Catherine of Siena and later graduated from Brother Martin High School.
In 2001, Jennifer was diagnosed with End-Stage Renal Disease caused by her brittle Type 1 Diabetes. She was quickly placed on dialysis. In 2002, she received a kidney from her cousin and a pancreas transplant from a deceased donor six months later. Sadly, ten years later, a tumor developed in the transplanted pancreas, which had to be removed, and Jennifer became diabetic again. Remarkably, her transplanted kidney has lasted 23 years—well beyond the average lifespan of a donated organ.
In December 2024, Jennifer learned her kidney transplant was failing, and she would need another. Just before Christmas, she underwent two surgeries and resumed dialysis, which she now does at home overnight to continue working full-time and supporting her family.
Jennifer has been on the transplant list for seven years and is now at the top. However, her case has become medically complex. A recent evaluation revealed that local hospitals are unable to perform the surgery. She now must search nationally for a transplant center capable of handling her condition, which involves extensive travel, lodging, and additional medical expenses.
Once she receives a new kidney, Jennifer’s immune system will be heavily suppressed to prevent rejection, meaning she likely won’t be able to work for several months. The burden of prescriptions, dialysis, co-pays, and other medical costs is substantial.
A Message from Jennifer and Her Sons
“The love, prayers, and support we’ve received have been overwhelming in the best way. We are deeply humbled and grateful. We truly have the best village behind us. ‘Thank you’ doesn’t seem like enough—but THANK YOU!”
