Support for Jennel’s Family After a Devastating Accident

Our colleague and friend, Jennel, one of our incredible ED paramedics, is facing an unimaginable crisis. On a dark rural road with no street lights, Jennel’s father was involved in a severe accident. A truck offloading farm equipment was stopped halfway in the road and halfway on the shoulder, without markers, lights, or a reflective vest. In the darkness, her father never saw it—and at 45 mph, he struck the back of the truck.

The impact has left her father with nine fractured vertebrae, a fractured femur, multiple rib fractures, a hemothorax, and a completely destroyed knee that will require a total knee replacement. He has already undergone a spinal fusion and currently has an external fixator on his leg. He remains hospitalized at Christ, facing a long and difficult recovery.

Jennel’s son, Carson, was also injured in the crash. He suffered a sternum fracture and a pleural effusion. Carson has just been discharged from Comer Children’s but is on strict activity restrictions for over a month and will require physical therapy for his hip.

As a mother, daughter, and dedicated member of our ED team, Jennel is now juggling hospital visits, caring for Carson at home, and preparing for the long road ahead for her father’s recovery. The financial strain from medical bills, travel, missed work, and ongoing rehabilitation is overwhelming.

Jennel has given so much to our patients, our families, and our team. Now it’s our turn to support hers.
