Jenina Marik is an amazing mom to two young boys, a talented photographer, and honestly one of the strongest and most resilient people I know. She is a life-long Southern Californian living and working in Santa Clarita for the past 20+ years. Now she faces an incredibly tough battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a relentless terminal disease causing progressive muscle loss and there is currently no cure. At only 39 years old, the challenges she and her family are facing are immense.
Her Story
Jenina first felt the onset of ALS in March 2020, noticing a weakness in her leg while caring for her newborn son, Owen. After years of unexplained falls, muscle twitches and weakness, she was officially diagnosed with ALS in March 2023. The disease has rapidly progressed and in the past year she went from walking, to using a cane, and now is solely dependent on a wheelchair.
Even after her diagnosis, she’s remained positive! She is trying to keep her photography business going. She’s the same creative force behind the lens, but now she manages the editing and business from her wheelchair. And she travels in her wheelchair through the paseos to volunteer at Eli’s school. But to keep going she needs to make modifications.
Last year Jenina and Tyler purchased what they thought was their forever home, a beautiful split-level home in Valencia. But ALS had other plans. Their dream home has become increasingly difficult to navigate.

In addition, there will be medical costs for medication and other equipment.

Modifications Needed
- Accessible Upstairs and Downstairs Bathroom - the current setup requires her to go upstairs and do multiple difficult transfers to use the restroom. Renovations to doorways and remodel estimate is $20,000.
- Wheelchair Van - For Jenina to maintain some semblance of independence and active parenting, a functional used van estimate is $25,000.
In addition, there will be medical costs for medication and other equipment.
