*****UPDATE 2/20/26*******
I'm incredibly sad to share that Moises has passed away this week as a result of medical complications. He is survived by his wife, Jenny, and his two kids, Bianca and Kílan. All funds raised will be directed toward his incurred medical costs and supporting Jenny and her family through this difficult time.

Hi all,
Two weeks ago, Moises, my amazing host dad from my time spent in Peru, was involved in a horrific motorbike accident. Since then, he's been held at the ICU in Cusco, where he received an emergency brain surgery, and he continues to be in a coma. My host family's health insurance won't cover the procedure--on top of that, Moises typically works at various local hotels to provide for the family, but that source of income is now gone and it is yet unknown when he will be able to return to work.
He is currently being supported by his direct family: Jeni, my host mom, and their two children, Bianca (14 yr old) and Kílan (4 yr old). Jeni is the amazing language and cooking teacher at Awamaki, the sustainable tourism NGO that I worked at during my time in Peru. They also have additional extended family support in town. However, the unexpected cost of the medical procedure, the uncertainty of Moises' return to work, and the anxiety and stress of the accident is weighing on the family.
I've set up this fundraiser with the goal of raising $30,000 to cover the majority of the medical costs they will incur. I know these are trying times, and there are lots of important causes around the nation and world that deserve your attention and resources. However, if you are able, any donation helps.
Thank you all,
I feel grateful to have such a strong support network that I can rely on to help loved ones.
