On August 24, Jeff went into cardiac arrest while driving his propane delivery truck, resulting in a serious crash. Four bystanders stepped in to perform CPR and saved his life, giving his family more time with him. What happened that day was terrifying, and while Jeff survived, the road ahead is still long. Jeff is now recovering from heart failure and cannot return to work for the time being, which has placed a heavy strain on daily life as he focuses on healing.

Honoring the Heroes

Heroes don't always wear capes.

We want you to meet one of the people who saved Jeff's life.

When Jeff went into cardiac arrest and the truck crashed, diesel and propane were spilling everywhere — the truck could have caught fire or exploded at any moment. Paul Cunningham, prior service, 12 years in the Army infantry, told everyone to stay back because of the danger. Then he sprang into action anyway.

Jeff was already unresponsive — no pulse, not breathing. Paul asked two young men nearby to help him get Jeff out of the truck and away from the danger, in case it went up in flames. Together, they pulled Jeff to safety.

Then Zach, an off-duty police officer, ran over with his medical kit and immediately started CPR on Jeff — and didn't stop until paramedics arrived and took over.

Paul later said that when he looked up to thank the two young men who'd helped him, they were gone. Vanished, like they were never there at all.

We believe in miracles. We believe in angels. And we believe that the compassion and bravery shown that day is some of the best of what humanity can be.

Paul, Zach — thank you doesn't feel like enough, but thank you. Because you didn't hesitate, Jeff's family still has him.

Latest Update: Jeff is awake, talking, and off the ventilator. Doctors have diagnosed him with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy, and he's had a defibrillator/pacemaker implanted to protect against further heart rhythm issues. He's now working through recovery from pneumonia and broken ribs from CPR, and unfortunately, returning to commercial driving isn't expected for the foreseeable future.
