What was supposed to be an exciting new chapter for the Marano family quickly turned into a fight for health, healing, and stability.

While moving their little family from Colorado to Maryland for Jeffrey’s dream job, the Maranos’ world was suddenly turned upside down. During a stopover in Cleveland, Jeffrey lost all feeling in his legs. Within hours, he was paralyzed in over 70% of his body.

Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic—one of the nation’s leaders in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) treatment—confirmed the diagnosis and immediately admitted Jeffrey to the ICU. For the next three weeks, he remained there under the constant care of dedicated doctors, nurses, and therapists, fighting through the terrifying reality that his ability to breathe could be compromised at any moment.

Meanwhile, his wife Kelsey managed the impossible—caring for their 4-month-old daughter Ruby, making daily trips to the hospital, and ensuring their dachshund Henry was safe with a kind sitter. Friends and family rallied to support them, but the road ahead remains long.

As Jeffrey slowly began regaining some mobility, the medical team determined that he would only be discharged to an intensive inpatient rehabilitation center in Maryland. The only way to get him there: medical transport—an enormous and unexpected expense. At the same time, Kelsey, Ruby, and Henry had to continue on to Maryland to meet the movers at their new home in Frederick, all while waiting anxiously for Jeffrey to join them.
