Jeff Sommers has always been an active, healthy person, embracing retirement by traveling the world with me for the past decade. Our adventures have taken us through Europe and Mexico, where Jeff’s curiosity and love for culture, history, finance, and technology have helped us build friendships across the globe. He’s fiercely independent, always eager to immerse himself in new experiences and live life to the fullest.

Recently, Jeff faced a sudden and severe medical crisis that changed everything. What began as a week of illness at home quickly escalated, leading to three weeks in a foreign hospital. During that time, Jeff endured three separate medical conditions, suffered internal damage and bleeding, and required twelve transfusions of a rare blood type. Navigating a complex healthcare system in another language, we spent every day advocating for his care, arranging blood donors, and managing countless tests and procedures. The ordeal left Jeff physically weakened, with a significant weight loss and a long road to recovery ahead.

Now that Jeff is home, our focus is on his ongoing recovery, which is expected to take at least three to four months. He needs home nursing, specialized equipment, frequent doctor’s appointments, and a range of medications. The costs for these essentials, along with the uncertainty of how long his recovery will take and what his future health will look like, have placed a significant financial strain on us.
