Jeff Ladd was diagnosed with MS in 2013. The MS, not being a hereditary illness, has been linked by the Department of Veteran Affairs as a service connected disability. Jeff Ladd served in Iraq as a Sniper and a ground pounding Infantry Soldier. He was exposed to high levels of environmental contamination, such as detonated ordinance and FOB burning pits. He was blown up in a Humvee by an enemy IED and knocked unconscious for over 5 minutes. Doctors speculate that the impact that Jeffery took from the explosion is the key player into his developing MS. Several other Soldiers Jeff deployed with have also developed full blown cases of MS, while several others have developed MS like symptoms. An additional factor may be due to an undisclosed exposure to injections of anthrax, nerve agents, and other vaccines given to our Soldiers in Jeffery's unit. This being said, the VA is assuming full responsibility for Jeffery as a 100% disabled veteran.
Sally Newsome Ladd, Jeff's wife, has been the sole income provider in the home as a musician and a massage therapist, while holding down the house chores and responsibilities for their 3 beautiful children, Michael, Aida and Bella. Jeff, for weeks at a time, has spent 20 hours a day in bed unable to function even in the most basic of capacities. To say the least it has been hard , yet the resilience in that house is monumental. As MS symptoms come and go, Jeff will feel on the mend, and then get hammered again by his symptoms. He has been unable to keep any form of work for the last 5 years, and his whole left side of his body has atrophied and failed due to the lesions growing in his spine. Now that the VA has stepped in, a huge financial burden will be lifted, yet it will not be enough to cover stem cell treatments for Jeff.
As the VA operates more like social medical care, many treatments that are considered risky or unconventional are not covered. Yet, for MS, even conventional treatments are hit or miss; some patients respond well while others show no improvement at all. Through the VA Jeffery has exhausted his conventional measures that they will pay for. He has undergone the following treatments from the VA:
Steroids: Steroids are a one shot deal, unless a relapse occurs that is worse than any onset he's had, they only work the first time. The steroid treatment was a success and the symptoms became lessened, however, the MS still persists greatly.
Copaxone: Copaxone seems to be the go to for conventional medicine in terms of MS. The Copaxone shots were unsuccessful.
Physical Therapy (Tens Unit): Unsuccessful.
Eurology/Neurology: Successfully set Jeff up with the use of a personal catheter to use at home.
Outside of the VA Jeff has sought alternative treatments to include:
Acupuncture, Apitherapy, Message Therapy, Rolfing, Ayurvedic & Chinese Medicines, Psychotherapy for PTSD (Due to war & MS), Supplements, Chelation, Broccoli Root extract treated with radionics,
Dietary Discipline/Paleo, Dr. Terry Wahls/No Cafeine, No Alcohol, Gerson Therapy (Juicing), 30 sessions Chiropractic, Copper & Silver therapy, Cold Lazer Treatment, and a lot more.
The list of MDs Jeff has visited not covered by the VA is daunting. The Jeff Ladd household has spent tens of thousands of dollars and is now not able to finance anymore treatments. Many doctors have taken on his case pro-bono as it is so severe. He has most recently been referred to an MD who both specializes in stem cell treatment and has had impressive success in working with patients with MS. (I have attached some links that will give a brief understanding of the process.) This doctor has offered to do the treatment for $11,000 at half his going rate. Many patients who have received stem cell treatments have gone from wheelchairs to walking, from walking with a cane to running.
I know my Brother would never seek this platform or any other to reach out. I am seeking for him. I believe that most of you whom I am sending this to are unaware of the details of his condition and the need he has for financial assistance. So I am letting the cat out of the bag.
