Support for Jeff Fred’s Medical Journey

Jeff Fred has been a warrior most of his life. At just 19 years old, he faced and defeated Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The cobalt radiation therapy used to save his life at that time, however, caused lasting damage to his heart and surrounding tissue.

Years later, at age 41, Jeff began battling heart disease as a result of that earlier radiation. In 2008, he underwent open-heart surgery, and in 2021 he received a TAVR procedure to repair his aortic valve. Jeff’s case is unique- he has what doctors call a porcelain aorta, a condition where the aorta becomes heavily calcified from prior radiation. This makes surgical procedures extremely high risk, as operating around the aorta can be dangerous and complex.

We know that Jeff’s mitral valve needs repaired, but the risk and nature of his case have made that operation nearly impossible up to this point. Now, in this critical moment, the next steps are uncertain as his medical team evaluates every option with great care.

In recent days, the strain on his heart has severely affected his lungs, leading to a sudden and intense case of pneumonia. On Friday night, Jeff became very ill and was taken by ambulance to his local hospital. Within hours, he was flown by helicopter to St. John’s in Springfield, and the next day to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where he remains under close medical care.

These past days have been frightening and heavy as Jeff has battled sepsis, organ strain, and uncertainty hour by hour. Yet even in the hardest moments, we’ve seen God’s hand at work—guiding the doctors, nurses, and transport teams exactly where they were needed. After multiple attempts, the medical team was finally able to place the Swan catheter, allowing them to better manage his condition. The new medications are helping his heart pump more effectively and slowly reduce fluid, and the antibiotics are beginning to take hold. It’s still a critical time, but we’re holding tightly to the glimmers of hope and trusting that God is not finished yet.

Jeff’s wife, Brenda, and his daughters; Sara, Kaylee, and Jennifer and their families remain faithfully by his side. They are walking this journey with strength and unwavering trust that God is in control. Though the days ahead are filled with unknowns, their focus remains on prayer, gratitude, and hope for healing.

The financial burden of multiple life-flight transports, travel, missed work, and extended hospital care adds another layer of challenge during this time. Your prayers and any support you can offer mean so much as they continue to take this one step at a time, trusting God’s provision along the way.

We will continue to share updates as things progress. Every prayer, word of encouragement, and donation is deeply appreciated.

Thank you for surrounding Jeff and his family with love, faith, and support.
