HELP JEANNE SANDERSON REBUILD AFTER TRAGIC ACCIDENT
Donation protected
On Friday, October 18th, my friend Jeanne Sanderson and another friend of Jeanne’s, were in a tragic accident while making their way from Colorado to Williamsburg, VA, where Jeanne planned to take up residence near a close friend and hoped to invest substantial energy, experience and expertise in volunteering with Heritage Humane Society in Williamsburg. Just outside of Colby, Kansas, a powerful gust of wind lifted Jeanne’s truck and trailer, causing them to flip multiple times, ending up in a ravine. Jeanne was trapped inside. Her cat and three dogs were thrown from the truck by the impact. The other passenger was also ejected from the truck and had to be airlifted to a trauma hospital where she continues to recover under the excellent care of the Wesley Medical Center.
Jeanne suffered relatively minor physical injuries; fire and rescue professionals arrived quickly and were able to extract her from the truck. Thankfully, her cat Zelda and two of her three dogs Elvis and Millie, were recovered. But, her remaining dog, Serena, ran away from the accident and is still missing. The police, animal rescuers, farmers and untold other local volunteers, are continuing the search for Serena. Jeanne and myself plan to return to the scene of the accident in coming days to rejoin the search effort and salvage what little they can from the twisted wreckage.
Jeanne, who lost much of what she owned in the accident, is now facing the overwhelming task of rebuilding. This move has cost her so much already and she still needs to get to Williamsburg and set up her new life there.
- She paid $60,000 CASH for the used truck and trailer.
- She owes $7,000 CASH for towing the truck and trailer out of the ravine and back to the impound lot.
- She will owe another $2,000 to $3,000 CASH for disposal of the totaled truck and trailer.
- The truck and trailer were both totaled. Due to the age of the vehicles, Colorado deemed them too old to be covered for collision, so all she had was liability coverage which will reimburse her nothing for her loss.
- We don’t know the remaining cost of replacing her personal possessions, but it’s expensive to fund an entire life.
While the financial toll is staggering, the mental and emotional trauma are inconceivable. Please hold sacred space for Jeanne’s recovery and the safe return of Serena in whatever tradition is most meaningful to you. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
