Help Jeanette Rebuild After Losing Everything to a Scam

At 80 years old, Jeanette Johnson thought she was finally moving into her last home — a place to live out her years close to her grandson and great grandson. She left Rocky Point to be near them since they did not have any other family close by. A widow, Jeanette spent her life working. Her last 20+ years of work were in the school system’s special needs program. As an assistant, she was able to teach lift skills including baking to some of her students. She has dedicated her life to helping others in one way or another.

About a month ago, she found the perfect little home and hired the law firm Gunn & Messick to handle the closing. But what she didn’t know was that their systems had been hacked. Cybercriminals intercepted her closing instructions and sent her a fraudulent email, directing her to wire her entire life savings — $220,000 + — to a fake account.

She followed the instructions, believing it came from her attorney. By the time anyone realized what happened, the money was gone. She had printed the instructions and taken them to the Liberty NC brach of the State employees credit Union where no red flags were raised.

Now Jeanette’s dream of homeownership has been shattered. She can stay in her current rental through the end of August, but after that, she’ll have no home and no savings. She’ll temporarily move in with her grandson and his young family while she tries to figure out how to rebuild her life at 80 years old.
