Support for Jazmine’s Recovery After Devastating Car Accident

On her way home from work, Jazmine’s life was changed in an instant.

She was struck head-on by another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Trapped inside the wreckage for approximately 45 minutes, Jazmine had to be extricated by first responders and rushed by ambulance to UNMH with potential life-threatening injuries.

She sustained multiple severe injuries, including:

• A broken left femur

• A broken left foot

• A broken right patella (kneecap)

• A broken tibial plateau on her right leg

• Two broken bones in her right hand

• A large defect/laceration wound to her right leg

• A lacerated liver

• Two pneumothoraces

• Serious internal swelling

The day after the accident, Jazmine underwent a several-hour-long surgery to repair some of her most critical injuries. Following surgery, Jazmine required a blood transfusion. She remained in the Trauma unit at UNM Hospital for 8 days before being transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation facility, where she is now receiving intensive care and therapy.

Due to the extent of her injuries, Jazmine is unable to walk or use her dominant hand for at least 6 weeks, and possibly longer. This has deeply affected her independence and ability to manage daily tasks on her own — both physically and financially.

Jazmine is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of New Mexico — a career path she chose out of a passion for helping others recover and regain function after injury. Now, she is facing that same uphill battle herself.

Before the accident, Jazmine was a vibrant and active person who loved to exercise and live a healthy lifestyle. She is incredibly determined to get back to that life and continue working toward her degree and her dreams of helping other people — but she cannot do it alone.
