My name is Javon (they/them). I don’t know how you came by this link but I’m thankful you are reading. I have avoided creating this out of pride but I genuinely have no where else to turn.

I am asking for help with raising funds to secure housing for myself by September 1st. I recognize how soon that is. After 4 years, my lease is not being renewed and I’m faced with a dilemma: needing to move while not having a high credit score due to student loans and no one to co-sign on an apartment for me. I do not want to deal with the legalities of squatter’s rights and I no longer have the capacity to live with roommates. This may sound entitled to some but it has certainly taken a toll on my mental health. All my efforts in finding housing has resulted in denials due to lack of a guarantor or someone with better credentials/support being offered the place, sublets included. In addition, the cost of paying a broker’s fee to find a place has been astronomical, some times triple the monthly rent of places I’ve seen.

More than anything, I just want to secure a safe home for myself and my doggy. I am newly employed full-time at a hotel as well as contracted to lead devised works at NYU Grad Acting & New York Theatre Workshop this upcoming school year. All my streams of income combined, minus the cost of living, cannot compete with the thousands of dollars it costs to move.

Every dollar raised will go to paying broker’s fees and offering advance month’s rent to makeup for not having the privilege of a guarantor/co-signer.

HOW I CALCULATED MY GOAL:

Max budget: $1800/month

Avg 15% Broker’s fee: $3240

3-6 months advance rent: $5400-10,800

Security deposit: $1800

**Total due at signing: $10,440- 15,840**

(The above projections do not include actual moving costs and anything raised beyond that will go to getting movers, if possible)

Out of pride & work ethic, I will be contributing my own funds in addition to funds raised. My current income is capable of covering 1st & security. I just really cannot swing these high costs by myself and there is no moving-back-home or out-of-state option for me.

Every donation puts me closer to being housed but it is also recognition someone sees me and understands that I am truly trying. This ask is hard on my ego but I had to give up my cat & endure the shelter system in addition to house hopping to put myself through college and I cannot risk doing that again. I’ve done all the angry crying I can do. So here I am.
