My name is Kay, and I am raising funds for my boyfriend, Jason. On September 18th, our lives changed in an instant when a neighbor saw Jason having what appeared to be seizures in the car and called for help. When officers arrived, Jason was unresponsive. They pulled him from the car and began chest compressions and CPR before checking his pulse. EMS arrived and took over, rushing him to the emergency department. Jason had aspirated and was experiencing respiratory failure, so he was intubated. Unfortunately, he developed pneumonia as a result of the aspiration. After a few days, Jason was finally extubated, but from being intubated, he developed vocal cord paralysis (laryngeal edema). His voice is now so hoarse I can barely hear him, and it feels like his warmth is straining to get out.
After a day of being awake, Jason mentioned his left shoulder was hurting. An initial X-ray didn’t show anything, but before we left the hospital, another X-ray and an MRI were done, which revealed a brachial plexus injury. During his hospital stay, he also began to experience signs of hospital delirium. On the morning of September 29th, I noticed Jason wasn’t breathing and was experiencing hallucinations. The doctors and nurses tried giving him oxygen, but his levels kept dropping. He was rushed back to the ICU and re-intubated. The hospital reported that his pneumonia had reactivated. On October 9th, the doctors were able to extubate him again, but ENT and SLP said his vocal cord still isn’t moving, and he needs intensive therapy. Jason is on NPO, and after over a week, doctors performed a PEG procedure. He finally got to go home five weeks later, but he still needs a lot of therapy (OT, PT, SLP), doctor follow-ups, and is unable to work.
Jason is truly a character—he connects with people instantly, and his laugh is infectious. It’s heartbreaking to see him unable to get dressed or even get out of bed without help. We are starting to fall behind on bills, and the stress is overwhelming. Any support, whether it’s a donation or a prayer, would mean the world to us as Jason continues his long road to recovery. Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for considering helping us during this difficult time.
