When someone is fighting for their life with one major medical condition it is devastating. When they are battling TWO simultaneously it’s unfathomable. This is the journey my friend Jason Haberman is on at the moment.
I consider myself lucky to have reconnected with Jason. We hadn't seen each other since High School, but while mindlessly scrolling on Facebook one day, he came up as a suggested connection. I remember him as being warm, kind, and gentle. So I sent him a friend request.
We talked about old times and he told me he was so sorry for the loss of my husband from cancer, which had occurred over 5 years ago. It was genuine and extremely touching. But the next sentence he said, made my heart drop...
"I've been battling leukemia for a few years now...." He told me about the treatments he endured and talks of bone marrow transplants. And I couldn't even imagine how he navigated all of this solo.
Jason is a former service member. While he has medical treatments through the VA, his travels to those facilities are long and unending. I have tried to check in to see if he needed anything. I tried to give any insight I learned from my husband's cancer battle. Mostly I just check in to see if he needs anything. Of course, he declines any offer. Then I found out about the SECOND medical condition.
Jason had a severe back injury. This injury has required many surgeries over several years. The most recently in December. Unfortunately, this has not helped to alleviate his crippling pain. So if we are keeping score, this man is enduring chemo treatments, while crippled with back pain, all the while as the caregiver to his father.
Jason understandably can't work. I know he questioned me when I suggested a GoFundMe because as he stated it...."who would help me?" I want to show him he is not alone. So help me allow this former service member, all-around kind man, and devoted dog dad to his best friend Merlin, hopefully, have some peace of mind. Even if it's just for a fleeting moment.
