One Step at a Time: Supporting Jared’s Cancer Fight

Hi, my name is Kimberly McCain, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my family for my brother Jared Powell — a kind, strong, and resilient man who has always been a source of light and encouragement to those around him. He’s 47 - a typical Leo through and through: bold, loyal, and just dramatic enough to make life interesting.

Not long ago, Jared went to the doctor because his stomach was experiencing extreme bloating, hot flashes, and he was feeling extreme exhaustion — not just tired but deeply worn down. After years of pushing through, he finally got checked out. Doctors ran PET scans, ultrasounds, and countless blood tests. Then the doctor sat him down and said:

“You have a mass — about the size of a golf ball — in the center of your pancreas.”

After several MRIs and an endoscopy, the diagnosis came fast and heavy: Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with lesions on his liver and Stage 1 Kidney Cancer.

This news turned Jared’s world upside down.

Right now, the most effective treatment is a 7-hour surgery to remove 90% of the cancer — needless to say, Jared is a little anxious.

He recently relocated to Washington, D.C., hoping for a new start — to live with dignity and direction. But now he’s facing one of the hardest battles of his life, trying to manage the weight of cancer, medical costs, and everyday survival all at once.

Jared has always been a fighter. When life knocks him down, he gets right back up and pivots. He’s a writer, teacher, and corporate trainer who loves helping others be the best version of themselves. Now, it’s our turn to help Jared.

As his sister, I’ve seen firsthand how much he gives to others. Now he’s the one who needs support. This is why I’m inviting you to be part of this effort and, if possible, lend your support.

These funds will help cover:

Out-of-pocket medical costs and medications not covered by insurance

Transportation from Washington, D.C. to Atlanta, GA where he has a support network

The recovery period following surgery, including follow-up appointments and care

Housing, groceries, utilities, and monthly expenses while Jared focuses on healing

Transportation to and from medical appointments

Support services like counseling or physical therapy as needed

Insurance should cover much of the surgery itself, but there are still expenses during treatment and recovery that fall entirely on Jared.
