Sunday May 18th, my mom Janiece had a stroke while visiting friends out of town. She was incredibly lucky that she got a flat immediately before and had pulled over to change it when her right side went numb. After a short hospital stay, she was discharged and will be staying with us until she's recovered.
However, as a high school counselor who goes above and beyond every obligation while also juggling a night job cleaning houses, her life has been busier than she might be able to manage for a while.
And we all know how quickly she's gonna try to get back to it.
If you know Janiece, you already know how fully she takes care of those around her—often at the detriment of her own boundaries ("what are those?" I think I heard her say once). She works longer hours than she has to, volunteers with extracurriculars she's not compensated for (and wouldn't ask), and gives generously out of her lack.
And it's time that she gets what's coming to her.
We don't know how long she'll be off her feet. We don't know how fully she will recover. She may never be able to maintain the schedule she was before (silver lining). We don't know yet what kind of expenses she'll have from her stay or how soon she'll be able to go back to work.
But my mom has spent her life giving to everyone around her. And now, we finally have a chance to pay her back.
