To our family, friends, and anyone with a compassionate heart,

My husband and I are reaching out on behalf of our dear friend, Janie Pettigrew, who has recently been diagnosed with cancer, on top of several other serious health issues her family has been facing. Each chemotherapy treatment requires bloodwork beforehand, followed by travel to treatment centers if her levels allow. When she is able to receive treatment, the side effects leave her extremely sick and weak. As you can imagine, this has taken a heavy toll—physically, emotionally, and financially.

During the holidays, Janie’s condition worsened significantly, and she spent several days in the ICU. Her family has been traveling back and forth constantly, eating meals away from home, and spending long days and nights at the hospital just to be by her side.

To understand the kind of people they are: Janie and her family have volunteered countless hours at Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge and its Bluegill Bay Campground. They are responsible for running concessions, managing campsite bookings, maintaining the grounds, handling utilities, and caring for two campgrounds—doing all of this while navigating this devastating diagnosis and ongoing health challenges.

My family has known and loved them for many years. They are hardworking, dedicated, selfless, and endlessly giving. On a deeply personal note, when a tornado destroyed my family’s home this spring, Janie and her family were there for us—driving across the county through chaos and destruction without hesitation, simply because we needed them.

Janie and her family would never ask for help. They never expect anything in return for the kindness they show others. That is why we are asking on their behalf.
