Support Janet's Move and Medical Care

Hello! My name is Erin and I work at Photographic Center Northwest (PCNW), a school and gallery passionate about the photographic arts. Our courses offer everything from in-depth technical instruction to creative and artistic development. That's where Janet comes in! She has been on the faculty at PCNW since the 1990s, and now she needs our help!

A bit about Janet... She grew up on the Kitsap Peninsula in a home where photography was esteemed (her father and grandmother were both serious amateurs). She left home after high school graduation, received two BAs, and moved to NYC in 1980. There she worked as a freelance photographer, renovated a house in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, received an MFA in photography from Pratt Institute, got married, and had a child. She moved back to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1990s.

For thirty years, Janet has taught photography part or full-time in a variety of venues, from the International Center of Photography in NYC to the University of Puget Sound and, of course, Photographic Center Northwest. She has taught digital and film photography to about 200 high school students a year for 24 years in the Bainbridge Island public school system.

All great news, right? Well, the story takes a turn when, shortly after retiring, she was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). PSP causes loss of vision, loss of balance while walking, difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, and stiffness and slow movement. Janet can no longer live by herself in her fabulous loft space in the Sunny Arms Artist Cooperative in Georgetown and is moving to an assisted living facility in Silverdale, WA.

Janet will be selling her Sunny Arms space to help cover the $4,000/month assisted living rent and is moving out on October 10th. Let's all get together, throw down some funds, and help Janet to raise extra money to cover moving expenses and future medical costs.

Janet is a fabulous human being and has helped SO many people, young and old alike, discover the magic and beauty of photography.

In addition to contributing to this fundraiser, please consider stopping by the Sunny Arms on November 2nd for a big sale of Janet's darkroom equipment, strobes, art books, furniture, and lots of misc. Also, the Sunny Arms will be having their annual open studio event on November 9th - all of Janet's work will be displayed and available for sale, along with other building artists.
