Support Janet's Double Lung Transplant Recovery
Donation protected
Our incredible aunt, Janet (Zukowski) Micek, underwent a life-saving double lung transplant surgery on February 22, 2025.
Her journey: Janet’s health took a sudden turn when she went to urgent care for suspected pneumonia and was rushed to Regions hospital with dangerously low oxygen levels. She bravely faced the diagnosis of Anti MDA5, and a lung transplant became her only hope. On Valentine’s Day, she was transferred to the University of Minnesota’s ICU, where she endured a cardiac workup, life support via an ECMO machine, and several additional tests, proving her resilience and determination. Despite everything, her age, non-smoking status, and otherwise good health made her a good candidate and due to her condition, it put her at the highest priority on the national list.
Her surgery: On February 20th, Janet was approved and added to the active transplant list. The very next morning, her son Joseph received the miraculous call—a donor had been found! On February 22nd, under the skilled hands of Dr. Stephen Huddleston, Janet underwent a successful double lung transplant. Since then, she has shown progress, starting to speak and beginning physical therapy. On March 3rd, Janet was transferred out of the ICU— and is still in critical condition. We do see this as a step forward in her recovery.
Her recovery: Janet’s family has been her unwavering support system, standing by her side physically and emotionally through every twist and turn of this journey. She will continue her recovery for up to a month at the University of Minnesota, followed by several weeks at an Acute Rehab Unit, and then 24/7 care for months to come.
Janet’s boundless kindness and generosity have touched all our lives. She is a fighter, having survived a battle with cancer a few years ago. Now, we have the chance to show her the same love and support she has always given us.
Please consider donating to help with her ongoing medical expenses, rehabilitation, travel and other daily living expenses. Your care and love for our sweet Janet mean the world to us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
